Mushin Jujitsu is a Mixed System Of Combat (MSOC). My aim is to teach a full range of self protection / defence that is not hindered by any specific rules of engagement.
The Adult club opens with a warm-up followed by cardio endurance training with basic trips and throw-downs included. During this part of the class pad work is used to establish good all round striking skills. The adult grading system is divided into 7 stages and is worn as a red belt with up to 7 black tags. Grades are awarded as the student progresses and develops confidence, knowledge and the will to survive aggressive situations.
"We strive to be better human beings through training and discipline. Honesty – loyalty and strength of body mind and spirit are my foundations."
- Steve Barker Sensei (Founder MJJA)
Mu Shin is a Zen term, "Mu" meaning negation; "Shin" meaning heart, mind or feeling. Making the translation (confusingly) as "no mind". The word Mu Shin basically refers to a state of mental clarity and enhanced perception (sensory and intuitive) known as pure mind, produced by an absence of conscious thought, ideas, judgements, emotion (fear and anxiety), pre-conception or self-consciousness. A product of Zen meditative training. For the warrior (Samurai), meditation (towards Mu Shin) was an important compliment for technical training. Through Mushin the mind is not absent, but instead is freed. No longer inhibited, slowed, distracted, or clogged the mind was free to fully perceive, respond and commit to action.
